# Free CMS and digital signage software for BrightSign players

> Canonical HTML: https://screenrig.ai/partners/brightsign

BrightSign players run screenRIG, a free CMS and digital signage software, from an SD card. Copy one download to the card, power the player on, and read the code on the screen to your AI agent, which becomes your editor.

Updated October 27, 2026.

> **You:** The BrightSign in the stockroom shows a code, ABC 234. Pair it.
>
> **Agent:** Paired. The screen says PAIRING COMPLETED, and the BrightSign is online in your project.

## What screenRIG does for a BrightSign

screenRIG does the job of a CMS for your BrightSign players: a media library, playlists, schedules, your screens and a record of what played. Your AI agent is the editor. It builds the content, publishes it to the player and checks that it plays. The dashboard shows your screens, media, playlists and playback.

## Set up the card

You need a BrightSign player on OS 9.1 or newer, an SD card and a network.

1. Set the player's clock and network first. A wrong clock stops the secure connection.
2. Download the card package from the [BrightSign package page](https://screenrig.ai/brightsign/), which lists the current version and a checksum to check the download against. Copy it to the root of a FAT32 SD card.
3. Put the card in the player and power it on. The player shows a code.

If your agent does not see the player afterwards, finish its setup on the screen.

## What the player does at power-on

The player shows screenRIG's start screen: a dark wash, an amber stripe and the wordmark. It applies its hardware settings, with HDMI-CEC and video output among them, and checks that screenRIG answers. Then it hands the screen to the Player, which shows its code. Your agent pairs the player, and the Player says PAIRING COMPLETED before it moves on to what is scheduled.

*The moment your agent claims the code, on a test screen. A BrightSign hands the screen to the same Player.*

## It recovers on its own

With nobody there to press a button, the player looks after itself:

- **No network at power-on.** It keeps its start screen up and tries again, waiting longer each time, up to an hour. Once the Player has loaded before, a power-on with no network still opens it, and it plays what it has saved.
- **The Player is slow to load.** After 60 seconds the player takes the screen back and retries.
- **The Player goes quiet.** After 90 seconds of silence the window is rebuilt, and if opening it fails three times the player reboots.
- **You ask for a reboot.** Your agent can ask, and the player reboots, except in the first ten minutes after power-on.

## What your agent can switch

Your agent can switch the display on and off over the HDMI cable (HDMI-CEC) or black the screen out, and a display schedule runs on the player even offline. The Player's volume goes to the player's audio output. The player reports its health every fifteen minutes: Player uptime, CPU cores, display state and network type. The [Player guide](https://screenrig.ai/docs/players.md#device-control) tabulates every Player.

## Next, a touch kiosk

Your own interactive web app also runs on BrightSign, in its own sandbox, and your playlist pins the release you chose. The [kiosk software page](https://screenrig.ai/digital-signage/kiosk-software.md) covers the app side.
