# Apple TV digital signage app: images, video and ready-made apps

An Apple TV can be a digital signage screen. Install the screenRIG Player from the App Store, read the code it shows to your AI agent, and the Apple TV plays what you ask for: images, video, live streams and ready-made apps such as menus, clocks and dashboards.

> **You:** The Apple TV behind the bar shows a code, ABC 234. Pair it, put tonight's specials on it, and play our brand video after them.
>
> **Agent:** Paired. The specials are on the bar Apple TV now, with the brand video after them, and I checked a screenshot to be sure.

## Can an Apple TV be a digital signage player?

Yes. The screenRIG Player is a native Apple TV app, so there is no browser to keep open. It plays your content from the Apple TV's own storage, which means video does not buffer and a dropped network does not stop it.

One thing to know first: the Apple TV Player plays images, video, live streams and ready-made apps, and it does not open web pages or your own custom apps. For those, use another Player, such as an [Android TV](https://screenrig.ai/digital-signage/android-tv.md) or the [Amazon Signage Stick](https://screenrig.ai/amazon-signage-stick.md).

## Get the Player from the App Store

1. On the Apple TV, open the App Store, search for screenRIG and install the Player.
2. Open it. It fills the screen with a pairing code.
3. Read the code to your agent, or scan the QR code beside it with a phone that is signed in to the dashboard and confirm **Pair screen**.

Your agent needs the screenRIG plugin once. [Start](https://screenrig.ai/docs/start.md) installs it with one paste.

## What an Apple TV plays, and what it does not

| Content | Apple TV | Android TV and Fire TV |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Images and video | Yes | Yes |
| Live streams | HLS | HLS and RTSP cameras |
| Ready-made apps | Yes | Yes |
| Soundtrack | Yes | Yes |
| Web pages | No | Yes |
| Your own apps | No | Yes |

A playlist that holds a web page or one of your own apps is turned away by the Apple TV, and the screen keeps playing the last playlist it accepted. Your agent knows this before it publishes, so put those pages on a screen with another Player.

## What an Apple TV can show

- **Images and video**, downloaded once and replayed from the Apple TV's storage.
- **Live streams**, as HLS.
- **Ready-made apps**: menus, offers, weather, queues, schedules and KPIs, with live data. Your agent picks one and fills it in. The [apps gallery](https://screenrig.ai/apps.md) shows them.
- **A soundtrack**: background music that keeps playing as pages change.

If a playlist holds a web page or one of your own apps, the Apple TV does not take it and keeps playing the last playlist it accepted. Put those pages on a screen with another Player.

## Press Menu for the Player's settings

Press Menu on the remote to open the Player's settings, even while it shows the pairing code. The Apple TV reports its uptime, memory, processor load and network type to your agent, which can also black the screen out and clear the Player's cache. It cannot restart the Apple TV, and the App Store updates the Player. Press Play/Pause on the remote to pause the screen, and again to continue where it stopped. The [Player guide](https://screenrig.ai/docs/players.md#device-control) tabulates what every Player reports and controls.

## Many Apple TVs in a managed fleet

Apple TVs managed through an MDM can join your project with no code to read out. Put a fleet link in the Player's managed app configuration under the `fleet_link` key, and each Apple TV joins your project as its own screen. The optional keys `asset_id` and `location` name the new screen, and `serial` lets a reinstalled Apple TV get its screen back. The [Player guide](https://screenrig.ai/docs/players.md#fleet-links) covers fleet links.

## Run it from your phone

The [screenRIG app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch](https://screenrig.ai/iphone-app.md) shows every screen live, edits playlists and approves your agent's changes.

## Apple TV digital signage questions

### Can an Apple TV be used as digital signage?

Yes. The screenRIG Player is a native Apple TV app. It plays images, video, live streams and ready-made apps from the Apple TV's own storage.

### Does the Apple TV Player show web pages?

No. It plays images, video, HLS streams, ready-made apps and a soundtrack. For a web page or your own app, use another Player, such as an [Android TV](https://screenrig.ai/digital-signage/android-tv.md) or the [Amazon Signage Stick](https://screenrig.ai/amazon-signage-stick.md).

### Do I need an MDM to run Apple TVs?

No. Read the pairing code to your agent, or scan the QR code with a signed-in phone. An MDM only adds the option to join Apple TVs to your project with no code, through a fleet link.

### Does an Apple TV keep playing with no internet?

Yes. The Player downloads your content once and replays it from the Apple TV's storage, so a dropped network does not stop it.

### Can I use an Apple TV on any display?

An Apple TV plugs into an HDMI input, so a display or TV with HDMI takes it. The [smart TV guide](https://screenrig.ai/guides/smart-tv-digital-signage.md) compares it with the other routes.

### What does Apple TV signage cost?

The Apple TV is your cost. screenRIG is free, with unlimited screens. Paid plans add business tools, more people, people to talk to, governance and contract terms. See [pricing](https://screenrig.ai/pricing.md).
